Disco Elysium
A literary role-playing game with an unforgettable interior life.
Disco Elysium treats the mind as a party of unreliable companions. Every instinct, ideology, shame spiral, and flash of perception gets a voice, and somehow the result is not chaos but a richer kind of role-playing.
Its greatest strength is that it lets failure stay interesting. Bad rolls do not simply block the player; they reveal character, tone, and consequence. The detective story matters, but the real case is the person trying to survive inside it.
The writing is funny, bitter, tender, and politically alive. Few games have made conversation feel this consequential.
Three stars because it is a major work of interactive fiction and a landmark for RPG design.
